Unsure of how to dress for an upcoming party? These tips will guide you towards the best fashion choices so you come out looking like a star.
No matter the type of event you’re attending, you’re going to want to make a statemen. Whether it’s a casual setting or an extremely fancy one, or just a typical night out with the girls, these tips and hints will help you put your very best heel forward in any scenario.
Casual Nights Out
If you’re just attending a casual event I’ve found it best to wear neutral, patternless pieces and then add in jewellery accessories to make yourself pop in a crowd. Rather than wearing a very busy and colourful top or dress, opt for something softer like a cream or ivory coloured blouse that is oversized. Tucking it into a pair of skinny jeans or even a pair of demin shorts will scream “casual” without saying “lazy”. Add a touch of colour with jewellery will finish off your look; try a bulky bracelet in a bright red or pink.
Stumped on what kind of shoes to wear to a casual scene? Flats are always the safest choice, and you can wear any kind of flat, too. Plain or fancy; it won’t matter: a ballet flat is the epitome of casual chic.
An Extremely Formal Outing
So you’ve been invited to a fancy gathering, whether it be a wedding reception or simply a birthday party at a fancy location. You have no idea what to wear. The first step would be to inquire with your host(s) about any specific attire that is required or suggested, and then go from there to build your look. For a special occasion, always do this before shopping around for clothing and accessories.
Dresses are always the safest route to go when planning an outfit for a fancy event, but if you’re not the dress type you may be stumped at what you could possibly put together. Although the pant suit hasn’t really made a return into the fashion world (at least in a good way), there is still plenty of room for you to dress up a simple pair of black dress pants. In keeping with the neutral and patternless theme for a casual night out, choose a top soft in colour with minimal patterning. My motto is always that less is more, and that wild and crazy patterns may look cute, but definitely not for a formal event. Find a satin blouse in a champagne tone, with black detailing either around the arm cuff or neck to complement your black dress pants.
A Fun Night Out With the Girls
These types of events are always the most fun and most likely easiest events to dress for. You have the most leg room here to go crazy with your outfit in a way that will match the mood of the evening with your friends. My personal favourites are form-fitting dresses in bright colours, matched with either a neutral or black pump so that all the attention is focused on your figure.
I like to keep accessories to a minimum when planning these kinds of outfits, so that the dress is what truly stands out. During the summer, find a form-fitting dress that is either strapless or sleeveless, in a bright summer colour like honeysuckle or coral. During the fall and winter, opt for a darker shade like navy blue or even black.
Just remember: each occasion you dress for has its own set of dos and don’ts. Making the right choices for the environment you’ll be in will ensure a successful night both fashion-wise and attitude-wise, because the best dressed woman always has the best time!
